  • Ketamine $1
  • Pneu-dart $10

Protocol

  • For 1000lb (450kg) horse load into pneu-dart or pole syringe the following:
    • 3 mls 300mg/ml concentrated xylazine 300mg/ml
    • 2 mls 100mg/ml ketamine 100mg/ml
    • 1 mls 50mg/ml concentrated butorphanol 10mg/ml

  • If using a pole syringe, run the horse into a chute in which you will have access to the horse from above. Aim for the gluteal muscles with the pole syringe. Do not stand directly above the horse at any point during this procedure (the horse may rear and try and jump out of the chute). Use a 14ga x 0.75” needle or 16ga x 0.75” needle for smaller horse.

  • If using a dart gun, confine the horse to an arena sized area. Try and get within ~20m (60ft) of the horse. Use a range finder to determine the your exact distance from the horse. Use the chart associated with your dart gun to determine how many pumps (if applicable) and how high above the target to aim. You want the dart to arc up and then down toward the horse rather than straight at the horse, so you should be aiming slightly high of your target, which should be the gluteal muscles.
